What Is a Gene?

Think of your body as being built from a giant instruction manual, and each gene as one recipe inside it. That recipe tells your cells how to build a specific protein — a tiny worker that does one job, like carrying oxygen in your blood or helping your brain cells communicate. You have roughly 20,000 of these recipes, inherited half from each parent, working together to build and run you.

What Is a Variant?

A variant is simply a change somewhere in one of those recipes — like a word swapped, added, or missing. Most variants are harmless; they're why people have different eye colors or can (or can't) taste certain bitter foods, and everyone carries thousands of them. Occasionally, a variant changes the recipe enough that the protein it makes doesn't work the way it's supposed to — and that's the kind of variant this foundation focuses on.

The UNC13A gene's recipe builds a protein that helps nerve cells talk to each other — it manages how one neuron releases its chemical messages to the next one across the tiny gap between them.
